COSMETICS & HAIR CARE
Copolymers of amino methacrylates and/or quaternized monomers are part of many hair care products as these polymers accumulate on the hair surface. Cationic polyelectrolytes, which show a strong affinity with hair keratin, are used for cationic adjustment. This is achieved by copolymerizing cationic monomers with hydrophobic, non-ionic ones, leading to polyelectrolytes whose films are elastic and less hygroscopic. All cationic polymers have to be listed for use in cosmetics. They are registered under a sequential number in the International Nomenclature for Cosmetic Ingredients, specifically as part of the polyquaternium group. The International Cosmetic Ingredient Dictionary and Handbook lists the INCI number along with the CAS number, trade name and supplier.
Soft contact lenses are hydrogels consisting of hydroxyesters, crosslinkers and other comonomers to increase hydrophilicity. VISIOMER® UHP HEMA (ultra high-purity hydroxy methacrylate) enables the production of dimensionally stable soft contact lenses with high wear comfort. This is achieved by combining high oxygen permeability with high water uptake. VISIOMER® UHP HEMA is often used in combination with crosslinkers, such as VISIOMER® EGDMA, PEG200DMA, TRGDMA and GMMA for this application.

Temporary crowns and bridges
Artificial teeth and dentures are manufactured using the monomer/polymer method. Here, formulations typically contain a certain amount of multifunctional methacrylates, e.g. VISIOMER® EGDMA. Composites for crowns and bridges, fillings and adhesives contain high molecular weight multifunctional methacrylates that show minimum shrinkage during polymerization, e.g. VISIOMER® HEMATMDI, as well as low-molecular-weight multifunctional methacrylates for viscosity adjustment, such as VISIOMER® TRGDMA. Dental applications also require monomers that can be light-cured. Due to its reactivity, VISIOMER® HEMATMDI is one of the methacrylate monomers that is specifically dedicated to this application.
